I had been living in Historic Cherry for a couple of years when one of the elders told me “You know, our graveyard is over there where the Little Theatre is.” She said it nonchalantly, with her characteristic soft-spokenness, but I felt the piercing nonetheless. I responded the way I’ve seen others in the theatre community respond since, when I’ve related the news. We grasp at a palatable qualification: “You mean it was near the theatre? Behind it?” 

I grew up in the suburbs of Charlotte during the 90s heyday of new development, a heyday that arguably has yet to pause. Newness was an integral concept in my childhood. Everything in South Charlotte was new.

Making a choice is the most powerful way you can assert yourself as a human being. It is a strong, sometimes scary, often daunting, extremely cool thing to do. So, as early voting kicks off in North Carolina this week, I want to encourage all the young people who’ve worked with us onstage or off—those who might for the first time be eligible to cast a ballot—to get out there and vote. Make the choice. Make many choices; it’s a long ballot.

Nonetheless, to the extent reviews matter, few of our plays received raves as profound and sweeping as Stephen Karam’s The Humans when it first reached stages a decade ago.
